It happened so that both, a play writer and a producer both independently love Japanese culture. Both are creators of Belarus origin, one living in Belarus, another - in Los Angeles. When they presented the Sea Shell Komachi to a young artist working in film fx, animation and visual arts, also Belarusian born, living in Estonia, the team was born.
There was not a long thinking to figure out that the characters of the play shouold be from Japanes Bunraku style, animated by magic of cinema, performing on a real stage.
Sea Shell Komachi is an animated film based on a theatrical play written by acclaimed Belarusian film director and script writer Andrei Kudinenko.
The story, steeped in the poetic legacy of Ono no Komachi, weaves together poetry, including haiku, to tell the tale of a young girl in the fantasy land pronounced Nippon. Amidst a war between the Lord of Seas and the Ruler of Lands, Yoka must reconnect with her native roots to restore peace to her homeland.
The vision of the director (Phil Bearz Filimonau) for the project involves combining a pre-filmed live-action theater stage environment with animated characters, replacing actors with 3D composed and animated figures. The distinctive Bunraku puppets — a unique gem of Japanese culture — are the perfect example to get inspired with to build these characters and bring them to life. Additionally, the inclusion of Magic Lantern-inspired decorative elements will paint the fictional world into a mysterious glow, emphasizing the narrative and enhancing the project’s artistic allure.
